About the Remove PDF Page Background
Remove PDF background with this tool. Turn every page of a PDF into a transparent PNG image, without uploading the file.
A PDF page often needs to be a transparent image — for a slide, a design, a layer in another document. Rendering it locally avoids the upload-and-wait round trip a server-side converter forces on you, and the file never leaves your device.
How to use the Remove PDF Page Background
- Choose your PDF, or drop it onto the page.
- Set the background tolerance, then press Remove Background.
- One page downloads as a single PNG; several pages arrive as a ZIP of transparent PNGs.
What you get out, by page count
| Case | Output | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| One page | A single transparent PNG, named {name}-page-1.png. | No ZIP for a single page — you get the image directly. |
| Several pages | A ZIP containing one transparent PNG per page, same naming. | Measured: a 3-page A4 document produced fixture-page-1.png through fixture-page-3.png inside fixture-pages.zip. |
| Tolerance | 0–100, default 30. Higher strips more near-background colour. | The engine samples the page corners to learn the background colour, then zeros the alpha of every pixel within tolerance of it. |
| Background colour | Detected from the four corners of each page. | White, cream, grey or any other solid page colour is handled without a separate control. |
Every page is rasterised, so text in the PNGs is no longer selectable or searchable — remove the background only if you need pictures. The PDF you dropped is untouched, so you can come back with a different tolerance at any time.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove the background from a PDF page?
Choose your PDF, adjust the background tolerance if the page is not stark white, then press Remove Background. Each page is rendered in your browser and exported as a transparent PNG — one page downloads on its own, and a set arrives as one ZIP.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser using PDF.js and a canvas. Your file never leaves your device, so there is no upload step, no processing queue and no file size limit imposed by a server.
What does the background tolerance do?
The engine samples the page corners to learn the background colour, then turns every pixel within that tolerance transparent. A stark white export needs a low number; a scanned page with a cream or grey background needs a higher one.
Which file format is the output?
Transparent PNG. That is the only format a browser canvas can write that keeps an alpha channel, so the output is always PNG and the background stays transparent. JPG and WebP would silently flatten it to white.
Can I remove the background from every page?
Yes. A multi-page PDF becomes one transparent PNG per page, named {name}-page-1.png, {name}-page-2.png and so on, delivered together as a ZIP.
What if my PDF is a scan or a password-protected file?
A scan renders fine — the engine strips the paper colour from each page image. A password-protected file is refused with a sentence, because its contents are encrypted until it is decrypted; remove the password in a PDF reader first.
